The Certification Process of PMI (Project Management Institute) – Step by Step

You’ve decided to obtain one of the certifications that PMI offers. At ITCE Training Center you can easily choose a date for your exam. This article aims to help you along the whole certification process.

You can register to take all PMI certifications at ITCE Training Center:
– Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) ®
– PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP) ®
– PMI Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP)®
– PMI Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP) ®
– Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP) ®,
– Program Management Professional (PgMP) ®
– Project Management Professional (PMP) ®
– PMI Professional in Business Analysis (PMI-PBA) ®.

The whole certification process consists of a few steps and includes meeting the prerequisites prior to taking the exam.

All PMI certifications require that you meet certain criteria such as experience and previous training so, before registering, you should prepare all that information. Each certification has its own criteria which you can find on the official page of PMI.

After you’ve become familiar with the requirements of the certification you wish to obtain and you have prepared the necessary information, you can begin your registration:

Online request

The first step is submitting an online request which, apart from a contact form, prompts you to give information about your education, previous experience, and trainings on the topic which amount to your PDU (Professional Development Unit).

After you’ve activated the request, it will remain active for 90 days from the start of the process. During this period, you have the opportunity to gather the missing information as well as to enroll on a training that can count toward your PDU.

Review and approval

After you’ve submitted your request, you will receive a response to your email in 5 to 10 days depending on the certification. You will receive the response after PMI checks whether you meet the criteria and whether your experience and/or training is valid and corresponds with the certifications guidelines.

For each certification, a small percentage of the requests are randomly selected for an audit. PMI conducts these audits so they can confirm the authenticity of the experience and/or the training described in the request.

Then again, within 90 days, you can provide the necessary information or enroll on a training to build your PDU.

Approval of the request and payment

After you receive the notification confirming the approval of your request, you need to pay for the exam so you can continue to the last step. The fastest and easiest way to do so is through the system for online certification at PMI. The system lists two fees depending on whether you are a PMI member or not. The payment goes directly to PMI.

When your payment is processed, you will receive an email containing a registration number that you need to use in order to choose a date for your exam. The request approval is valid for 1 year and within that period you can take the exam up to three times.

Choosing a date for your exam and certification

Along with your approval, you will receive a registration number. It’s time for you to choose when to take the exam.
