ITIL4 is one of the most significant events of last year for the IT and digital organizations. Updated for the needs of the digital world and integrating ITIL with best practices from the worlds of DevOps, Agile, and Lean, we can state with confidence that ITIL4 is not only for IT professionals but for everyone who collaborates with IT teams and/or contributes to digital products and services.
For those of you who tuned in our webinar with Orlin Marinov, co-founder at ITCE, can now make the connection between ITIL 4 and the historic launch of SpaceX Crew Dragon. 😉
Now, as promised during the webinar – we received lots of questions, part of which we responded to live, and part of them we didn’t have enough time for, so we summarized the main topics of the Q&A session. Enjoy!
Q1: Do ITIL v3 certifications expire?
No, ITIL v3 certifications don’t expire but knowledge update is highly necessary in the context of digitalization of businesses, products and services.
Even if the processes of the organization where you work are based on ITILv3, having ITIL4 knowledge will help you introduce improvements in your organization.
Starting with ITIL 4 Foundation, we can share from our experience that Bridge editions of ITIL 4 Foundation are not highly efficient as the time is not enough in order to deep dive into the topic.
If you already have 17 credits in v3, then you can continue directly with the ITIL Managing Professional Transition module where within 5 days you will cover in short all intermediate modules.
More on the topic of transition from ITIL v3 to ITIL 4 you can read in our blog article here.
Q2: Which ITIL4 publication is for whom?
Create, Deliver & Support
ITIL® 4 Specialist Create, Deliver and Support is the logical next step after ITIL 4 Foundation and is suitable for ITSM specialists, responsible for operations and management of digital products and services.

Drive Stakeholder Value
ITIL® 4 Specialist: Drive Stakeholder Value is for everyone who would like to know more about the ‘engagement’ activities relating to interactions and touchpoints with various kinds of stakeholders.

High Velocity IT
ITIL® 4 Specialist: High-Velocity IT will introduce you to the so called futuristic state of the IT organizations and is suitable for professionals responsible for aspects of IT.

Direct, Plan & Improve
ITIL® 4 Strategist: Direct, Plan and Improve – as the name suggests – ITIL Strategist – is suitable for those who are in charge of the management and design of the strategy and continual improvement of the IT teams and organization.

Q3: For which roles within an IT company is suitable to get certified for the Managing Professional (MP) and for which the Strategic Leader (SL) qualification?
If we should make a general statement, then ITIL MP is suitable for all IT roles which are related to the development and exploitation of digital products and services, while ITIL SL is suitable for roles which should create and align business and digital strategies, so Product Managers, Business Owners and even Business Executives in digital companies.
Q4: How is swarming being organized in practice and how are cases being transferred among different levels?
In general, swarming is based on the collaboration between different levels and areas of expertise, so the collective expertise is important and in this sense, when organizing swarm, we don’t have transfer of work (cases, tickets, etc.).
The swarming practice is most deeply discussed in ITIL® 4 Specialist Create, Deliver and Support.
Q5: When will ITIL4 Strategic Leader become available?
Funny enough, during our webinar, we received information regarding ITIL® 4 Leader: Digital and IT Strategy (DITS) and that at the beginning of July the exact launch date of the final publication and certification level of ITIL 4 will be announced.
This module will be focused on the alignment between digital business strategy and IT strategy, the effects of disruptive innovation on established business models and organizations and on the necessity for agility and value creation.
ITIL4 Leader: Digital and IT Strategy (DITS) together with ITIL4 Strategist: Direct, Plan & Improve lead to the ITIL4 Strategic leader qualification.
